Bariatric surgery has been recommended has an option to help reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic patients in India.
This advanced form of treatment was introduced in India by Dr M Ramesh of A V Hospital almost four years ago.
Speaking at the Metabolic Surgery Consensus Summit in Bangalore, he said that bariatric surgery was previously only carried out on morbidly obese patients for weight loss.
However, doctors noted improvements in blood sugar levels of a vast majority of patients undergoing this surgery, leading to "a reduction in oral medication and insulin dosage".
"Four years ago, when we introduced bariatric surgery here, we learnt that diabetics benefited from this weight loss surgery . Upon studying the pattern closely, we understood that this surgery helps treat diabetes surprisingly well," Dr Ramesh added.
The Metabolic Surgery Consensus Summit was held to help doctors learn more about the surgery, which helps reduce certain harmful hormones secreted from the intestine which affect the pancreas.
The treatment, first practised in South America, is known to have a success rate of 95 per cent.
