Bangaloreans Take To The Streets For Diabetes Walkathon
Mon, 21 Nov 2011
Thousands of people in Bangalore walked in support of a global call for action against Diabetes on Sunday.

The second edition of the Lifestyle 'Beat Diabetes' Walkathon- a Landmark Group initiative, saw Bangaloreans gathering as early as 6am at the city’s Kanteerva stadium, donning blue T-shirts – the colour used to mark World Diabetes Day.

Over 8,000 participants of all ages walked set off from the stadium and went around Cubbon Park before returning to the stadium, where kiosks for checking blood glucose levels had been set up.

Speaking on the occasion, Kabir Lumba, MD, Lifestyle International, said: "In the fight against this lifestyle disease, awareness plays a vital role."

"Beat Diabetes aims to spread this message and encourage people to embrace healthy eating habits, exercise every day and get regularly tested for the condition."

Supported by The Times of India, the second edition of Beat Diabetes Walkathon was the culmination of a 10-day-long campaign during which 23,000 people, including 3,000 policemen and army men, were tested for blood sugar levels and 50 per cent were found to have diabetes .
