Mon, 25 Jul 2011
A mass screening programme to identify people suffering with diabetes and hypertension in the slums of Delhi has been launched by Indian Government.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said over the next two months Delhi’s entire slum population, including all pregnant women, will be tested in a bid to control the diseases and prevent associated complications from developing, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, retinopathy and kidney disease .

All persons diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure during the screening phase will be treated and referred to hospitals for further guidance and treatment.

The initiative is part of a wider government programme to screen people for diabetes and hypertension in 100 select districts and 33 cities with more than 10 lakh population.

Mr Azad said: "We will screen five crore persons before September 2011 when UN General Assembly will hold a special session to discuss means and measures to control these diseases."

He added that the non-communicable diseases have become the cause for around half of all deaths in the country and that India has the second-highest diabetes rate in the world, behind China.
