China once again holds the unwanted title of Diabetes Capital of the World', with cases of the metabolic disease surging ahead of India.
According to new figures revealed by the 5th edition of Diabetes Atlas, there are now approximately 90 million diabetics living in China, more than any other country in the world and almost 30 million more than India (61.3 million).
The figure is also nearly four times as many as the United States, which has the third largest diabetes population at 23.7 million.
While the data highlights the rampant progress of the global diabetes epidemic, it is a huge variance from the statistics presented during the last edition of the Diabetes Atlas (2009), which put India at the top.
At 50.7 million, India was the country with the highest number of people suffering from either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, followed by China with 42.3 million.
However, things changed a year later when China produced results of a nationwide study, pegging the country's diabetic population at 92.4 million.
This figure has now been accepted and further validated globally following the mid-November release of the 5th edition of the Diabetes Atlas.
