Eli Lilly, Boehringer Diabetes Drug Gets EU Approval
Fri, 26 Aug 2011
Pharmaceuticals Boehringer-Ingelheim and Eli Lilly have won approval from European regulators to market their type 2 diabetes drug linagliptin.

In a statement, Indianapolis-based Lilly and German drugmaker Boehringer said the European Commission granted marketing authorization for 5-milligram linagliptin tablets to be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications such as metformin and sulfonylurea.

The European approval was based on a trial involving around 6,000 adults with type 2 diabetes. The results showed linagliptin improved blood glucose levels, compared with a placebo, as well with other medications .

The drug, which belongs to a class of prescription medicines called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, is known as Tradjenta in the US but will be branded as Trajenta in Europe.

It is the first to be developed and marketed as part of a five-year drug alliance between Lilly and Boehringer, which was signed back in January.

In May, the diabetes pill was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to be used as a stand-alone treatment for type 2 diabetes or in combination with other treatments, diet and exercise .
