Hyperglycemia - High Blood Sugar

Hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose, is a common condition amongst diabetics.

It can occur when a diabetic eats too much food and does not take enough insulin to control their level of blood sugar. The symptoms of hyperglycaemia are similar to the main symptoms of diabetes but can be more severe and abrupt. They include:

If hyperglycemia occurs, you may need to change your dosage of insulin, or your diet, to keep your glucose levels stable.

If left untreated, hyperglycemia can lead to a rare called diabetic ketoacidosis, especially in people with type 1 diabetes.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is caused by the build up of acid in your blood and without treatment can eventually result in extremely serious complications and even death. If you develop diabetic ketoacidosis, you will need to have urgent treatment in hospital.
